Hailes AbbeyIt was Hailes Abbey that incurred the wrath of Anne Boleyn, and thence Henry VIII,
for conning pilgrims out of their hard earned cash with a phial of Christ's blood
- verified as such by no less than the Pope. It was either duck's blood or clarified honey coloured with saffon
depending upon which version you believe.
The Abbey ruins are worth a visit. Take advantage of the audio guide which is included in the entrance price as it tells the story of the abbey and the life of the monks. The Abbey church must have been quite a sight if the illustrations are to be believed. |map| |next attraction| |
