Mappa MundiBefore the printing press books were written by hand making them rare and precious objects. Hence
in Hereford Cathedral the books were chained to the library shelves to stop them going walkabout.
That the chained library has survived in tact is remarkable.
The Mappa Mundi also survives from the 13th century unscathed by dissolution, pillage or civil war. It is a schematic map of the known world with Jerusalem at its centre and the good old British Isles squeezed in at the bottom left hand edge. |map| |next attraction| |
