Places To Visit. Enjoy the bank holiday and find interesting and entertaining places to visit and things to see. And hotels in arundel, Chichester, Amberley and Ludlow are good places to stay when visiting these attractions.
The Thursford Collection is interesting. Everyone will love the steam powered fairground rides and organs, great fun. Enthusiasts will relish the collection of traction engines - Aveling & Porter, Garrett, Ruston Proctor, Foden, Clayton are all there.
Yet for some the main attraction is the mighty Wurlitzer and the brilliant organist Robert Wolfe. In the summer there are two half hour shows each day.
There's something for everyone at Beaulieu. Of course there's the magnificent motor museum, but there is also the Abbey, the monorail, the James Bond cars, the Wheels ride and if you're there on the right day don't miss the Falconer telling his tales of the true sport of kings.
The monorail gives a great overview of the place but if you've no head for heights you can get around on the old bus. Near the house itself the Secret Army exhibition tells the story of SOE, the Special Operations Executive, all good cloak and dagger stuff.
Fascinating account of the development of radar and bags of kit to look at. The original Cold War Operations Room, where a Soviet nulcear strike and the West's response would have been tracked, is both chilling and impressive.
The 1940 Battle of Britain Filter Room and 1942 Night Blitz Operations Room provide authentic glimpses into life at RAF Coltishall in the Second World War. Plus lots more.
The gardens are pleasant though not extensive and there are three narrow gauge railways to ride on - two tour through the garden centre's back lot. And for steam enthusiasts there's a collection of standard gauge locomotives.
The Dad's army exhibition is professionally done - exterior Dad's Army scenes were filmed in nearby Thetford.
If you like large numbers of small, noisy mammals running aimlessly hither and thither visit Marwell in the school holidays. Then compare the meerkats, lemurs and macaques to these, their evolutionary second cousins, and you'll conclude the meerkats win hands down. This is a place for families, so go in June or September if you don't want to be deafened in the cafe.
If it's cold or raining - or both - head for Tropical World, and just beyond it the enclosed walkway that wends its way amongst the lemurs. There are plenty of places to sit and have a picnic, some indoors. See also Monkey World.
The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is a must for all railway fans. It takes a good hour to get from Hythe to Dungeness where there's a cafe and a lighthouse to climb.
For the anoracks the railway is 15 inch gauge and the engines are one third size. This is one of those great places to visit during school holidays. The Dungeness power station visitor centre is no longer open by the way.
Many enclosures and buildings house a bewildering variety of apes and monkeys. Everything from ring-tailed lemurs to orangutans and gibbons. Watching our evolutionary cousins close up is absorbing.
Choose a warm, dry day as it's quite a big place and there is a fair bit of ground to cover. If you like animals you'll love this place. One for all the family.
The Dinosaur Museum is designed for kids of 10 and under, but older children and adults will learn something from the displays. The video takes you through the evolution of the dinosaurs over the millions of years when they reigned supreme until their eventual demise.
The displays have the air of a school project about them and the museaum is quite small. The larger exhibits are models of dinosaurs rather than the real skeletons you'll see in the Natural History Museum.
The Railway runs the scenic five miles from Holt to Sheringham. Plenty of parking at Holt station. The Sheringham station is in the town near to the cafes and seaside attractions.
It's a standard gauge railway, mostly steam with occasional diesels. Travel outside school holidays if you want a quiet ride.
Garrett's 1852 traction engine factory is now a museum. There are some fine models in the Boardroom, traction engines on the shop floor and other exhibits to browse around.
Steam aficionados will appreciate the display in the gallery that tells the story of steam from earliest times through Newcomen, inventor of the piston-and-cylinder steam engine; Watt, and his tightly patented improvements; to modern day steam turbines.
Before the printing press books were written by hand making them rare and precious objects. Hence in Hereford Cathedral the books were chained to the library shelves to stop them going walkabout. That the chained library has survived in tact is remarkable.
The Mappa Mundi also survives from the 13th century unscathed by pillage, dissolution or civil war. It is a schematic map of the known world with Jerusalem at its centre and the good old British Isles squeezed in at the bottom left hand edge.
It is still a pleasure to wander around Winchester, very civilised place - go before it gets spoiled. King Arthur's Round Table in the Great Hall is one of those things you have to see though it is just a table - apparently painted at the behest of Henry VIII.
For relaxation, stroll down past the cathedral, Winchester College and Wolvesey Castle to the water gardens. For fun with an educational content the INTECH Science Centre & Planetarium is good value. There's plenty to do for a full day out in Winchester. Nearby: Marwell Zoo.
