This is the UK's only museum dedicated to China Clay. As well as discovering the history of china clay, you can explore the old workings and see how they turned the white rock into the clay from which fine poreclain is made. It's one of those great places to go in cornwall in August.
There are water wheels, settling tanks and lots of old industrial stuff to look at. There's also a nice walk up through the woods to a look-out point. From here you can look down into the quarry from which china clay is still quarried today. Get there at the right time and you may even see them blasting. Very interesting place to visit.
Adults, don't be put off - you'll enjoy it too. You explore various pirate-relatec scenes, but this is more than just life-sized figures to look at: actors play pirate characters telling you about their ships, smuggling their way of life - and death.
There are scary bits and you will jump on several occasions. Children might well be finely scared by the Sunken Village of the Damned. If you're prepared to throw yourself into the spirit of the place it's great fun. Practise saying "Aaaarrrr" in your best Robert Newton pirate voice before you go.
This is an odd place. Originally a tin mill, the site now houses a collection of unconnected "attractions". There's a huge jewellery store with a De Lorean in the entrance way and James Bond's Aston Martin in the cafe. Another building houses the Tolgus Tin Mill museum (but Blue Hills Tin still does it for real) and a moderately good 3D cinema "ride".
There's gold panning, but it's tap water running through a trough and the gold comes from the jewellery shop: it's not proper gold panning as at the Dolaucothi Gold Mine. There's a place selling teddy bears and another selling pearls. You might find something to interest you, and entrance to the site is free. But the place has no soul.
